Apple has finally announced the release date for the much anticipated Mac App Store. Opening for business on Thursday, January 6, the App Store will be available in 90 countries at the launch and will feature both free and paid apps in various categories.

The press release quotes Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs,
The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.
Featuring Apps in categories including Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities, App store will make the discovery and installation of Apps easier, as per the needs of the users. Users can browser across Apps, searching categories, read customer ratings and reviews; an experience similar to App Store on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Originally announced during Back to the Mac event, Apple is trying to reinvent the App discovery on the Mac, quite similar to where Google is also heading with Chrome Web Store.
For the App developers as well, the store could be a perfect place enable people to explore, purchase, and download apps directly on their Mac. Apple is offering a 70 percent of the sales revenue to the developers for paid Apps for which submissions have already began last month.
We’re waiting to see if Apple actually has anything different and revolutionary to offer! What about you?
