Awesome System Monitoring with Conky

Posted by Mani On June - 4 - 2010

Conky is a highly customizable system monitor for X Window System, that displays any information on your desktop in a very interactive manner. The light weight app is difficult to customize, the reason why many linux users don’t give it a try, especially the beginner’s. It can be installed manually as well as from the Synaptic package manager.

conky logo1 Awesome System Monitoring with ConkyI am very fond of customizing my own desktop and the most important thing about linux is that it gives you the freedom of making it as cool or geeky as you ever want your desktop to be. It can be used to display almost anything on your desktop, ranging from CPU usage, time, weather to anything you wish to see! Once you have installed the theme of your choice, you can make it look even better by using some scripts with conky.

Also read:

Firstly, you need to download Conky from its website – http://conky.sourceforge.net/ Install it on your system. Ubuntu users can use the command:

sudo apt-get install conky
  1. After the installation, you can download these scripts and extract directly in your home directory: Download scripts
  2. Now you need a conky configuration file to use the scripts. You can download the configuration file that I am using: Download conkyrc
  • Place the configuration file in your home directory (say ~/home/user/.conkyrc)

If you face any problems during or after installation, let us know, or you can read the FAQ section on their website. Since you are now finished with the installation, you can start conky with command conky (alt+f2 and type conky or type command in terminal).  To make conky as a startup application, just add command conky in startup application from system preferences.
