No need to specify what the Gnome stands for if you are believer of open source society. After a lot of efforts of developers and community members a new make over has been given to this desktop environment which will be packed up in upcoming distributions later this year (may be in September or later after its release of version 3.0).
Featuring Gnome 3.0
The new Gnome mainly focuses on the ease of use and an enhanced interactive environment. It will provide all previous applications along with the two new interfaces Gnome shell and Gnome Activity Journal.
Still in the development phase, while the developers decide upon the its release date, you can still install the development version of Gnome shell in Ubuntu 10.04 via apt or synaptic. Here are some previews of Gnome Activity Journal and Gnome shell.
