Google for Secure Search: Enables SSL Encryption for Web Search

Posted by Sahil Malhan On May - 22 - 2010

Google has taken its  search engine to another level by enabling SSL encryption on their search engine, understanding the basic needs of privacy and security while searching. Previously, Google offered SSL enabled connections on some of its products that include Gmail and Google Docs. Earlier this year, SSL enabled connections were made default for Gmail users.

These kinds of connections can generally be seen on e-commerce and banking websites, where secure connections are made to encrypt login and transaction information.

SSL or Secure Search Layer prevents 3rd party from intercepting whatever you do on a SSL enabled connection. SSL enabled on search will protect your search terms and results to be intercepted by 3rd parties. This is a result of the encrypted connection created between browser and google. In its beta stage, the service is currently available for web search only, and not any other service that includes image search or google blog search.

To access the service, head over to https://www.google.com. (Notice the “s” in https)
