Google Images Gets a Much Needed Makeover with Cleaner UI
Google search is known for its clean and minimal UI. With time, google has added features to the search engine to make it look better and secure, some of them include the encrypted search and background image on its homepage! Without compromising with the quality of search, these interface changes have been brought in and have been loved by most of the users.
Adding yet another feature to its kitty, Google image search has been given a much needed makeover. According to google, it is the largest redesign of Google Images since 2001.
Google Image Search: Before Makeover
The changes are mainly focussed to make image browsing efficient. Earlier with white spaces and descriptive text underneath the images, the improved version has a cleaner interface, infinite scrolling, larger thumbnail preview and more.
The improvements can be summarized as:
- A cleaner and less cluttered interface with easy navigation.
- Less white space and more images(a little “unlike” google).
- Pop-up thumbnails on mouse-over(hover).
- Infinite scrolling.
- Bigger image preview on clicking, with a preview of the website it came from.
Google Image Search: After Makeover
Another addition being Google Image Search Ads, a new ad product that allows the advertisers to run their own image as an ad on Image Search.

I like the infinite scroll, but the “cleaner interface” is only clean because they cleaned out lots of very useful information, like the URL, Size and text snippet that you must now hover to each picture individually (with a short delay!) to see. That information was a key element in doing a serious search, providing contextual cues to the user that guided the choice of which image to open. It will be sorely missed.
As I recall, Google already tried to remove the context a while back then put it back in after users protested (I know I did). I sure hope they do the same now!
Even I remember that, but this time, its just a case of hovering over the image. And the best thing, when you wish to see the image, the creepy frame will not be there!
Thanks for the comment!
