India, potentially has a strong and promising market for low-end mobile phones. Some of the new brands coming up with low-end mobile phones and reasonable prize range are able to establish themselves in India because of the same reason. Realising the potential for growth, HP moved a step further to support them.
“SiteonMobile” is a cloud based internet technology that allows you to access to internet using the simplest of methods, i.e. SMS and voice services. Relying on GPRS technology here is a tough task, as the internet speeds are neither too good, nor are the services well managed and its reach is restricted to regular internet user only.
HP’s ‘SiteonMobile’ technology has been derived from the HP Labs project, meant to make Internet content and services available to the masses even from low-end mobile phones. This may lead to shift in focus of developers to developing applications for low-end mobile phones as well.
A few words from Sudhir Dixit, Director, HP Labs India.
“We are ready with the portal-based solution where website owners can create TaskLets for the services. We received positive response from select businesses whom we approached to partner with us. They not only agreed to use our platform, but also offered to enhance their web portals to offer services they wished to make available through mobile phones but hadn’t been able to invest time, money and resources for it so far.”
Providing relevant content to what mobile users request, rather than the whole webpage, the technology focuses on task-based services to those having no access to internet. The tasks are accomplished by compressing the web content, creating Tasklets to define specific tasks which generate the desired reponse to users and are easily accessible!
Currently available on invitation bases, the technology is surely going to change the we access internet on mobile phones!
