Install Opera Mini on Ubuntu & Access Blocked Websites on PC

Among the well known mobile web browsers, Opera Mini is not limited to mobile phones but, you can have it running on your Desktop as well. This can be easily done using some emulator programs that behave like a mobile phone and these emulators run as a desktop application on your system.

For those who are behind the firewalls and need to unblock websites but their Administrations (in colleges, offices) are not allowing to do them so, Opera Mini hack works like a charm as the sites are transfered  through Opera Mini servers  which hides your original requests from your college or office proxy servers.

How to Install Emulator and Opera Mini on Ubuntu

  • First you need to have Java in your system. To check java in your system you can use command

java -version
If you don’t see any version then download sun-java6-jre from synaptic.

  • Also download Opera Mini .jad and .jar files from opera.com.
  • Open Terminal (Accessories >> Terminal) and change directory to downloaded microemulator directory and run command

java -jar microemulator.jar
In emulator go in  Options->Select devices.. and choose Resizable device.

  • Locate Opera Mini .jad file from emulator File -> Open MIDlet File

Now you will see Opera Mini option with start button. Just click start and load Opera Mini.

Update 1:  If you’re behind the proxy server then set proxy in Microemulator for Opera Mini by editing the file - $home/.microemulator/config2.xml Here you can set the proxies in this format inside config tag:

<config>
<system-properties>
<system-property name=”http.proxyHost” value=”Your-Proxy-Address”></system-property>
<system-property name=”http.proxyPort” value=”Your-Proxy-Port”></system-property>
<system-property name=”http.nonProxyHosts” value=”localhost”></system-property>
</system-properties>
</config>

Just add your proxy address (or ip) and port where it says “Your-Proxy-Address” and  ”Your-Proxy-Port“.

Drop a line if this post was useful for you. Let me know for any error while installation.

    Hey – all good up to the point where facebook refuses my log in and asks me to login “at a computer” instead.
    Ubuntu 10.04, java version “1.6.0_18″ OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.8.1) (6b18-1.8.1-0ubuntu1) OpenJDK Server VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode). microemulator-2.0.4, opera-mini-5.1.21214-advanced-en.jar.

    Many thanks.

    Hey – after logging on at a normal connection I can now use your hack and access facebook. Time wasted in the pursuit of wasting time.

    Can I change opera mini’s settings to display like standard opera?

    Regards.

    • Mr. Tickle says:

      There you go. You solved the issue urself! :)
      And regarding the display, you can’t change it. The web browser is designed for mobile phones and will look as if it is running there only! ;)

      You must check: “In emulator go in Options->Select devices.. and choose Resizable device.”
      This will get you what you need! :-)
