Linux Tip: Set Different Wallpapers on Each Workspace in Ubuntu

From the day I started using Linux, I have been trying to fiddle around with the workspaces and my tips box is full of many tutorials that I will be sharing with you in future as well. This tutorial is intended to show you how to have different wallpapers on each of your workspaces.

Workspaces in linux OS make the organisation of desktop much easier, allowing you to manage which applications are available on your screen. You can switch between them at any time, with each workspace containing same desktop, panels, and same menus, but all workspaces have same wallpaper.

How to Set Different Wallpapers on each workspace

For this tutorial you need to have CompizConfig Settings Manager on your system and you should install avant window navigator for navigation purposes because after doing this you will not have link on to your desktop.

#1. Open CompizConfig Settings Manager [System>>Preferences>>CompizConfig Settings Manager]

#2. Now select “Wallpapers” under the “Utility” section.

#3. Under Backgrounds tab select different wallpapers of your choice for each workspaces.

Tip: Download All official Ubuntu and Fedora Wallpapaers

#4. Now close CompizConfig Settings Manager and press Alt+f2 . Here type “gconf-editor” as in the screenshot.

Go under: Apps>>Nautilus>>Preferences and uncheck the “show_desktop” option just like in screenshot.

There are some other tools to have different wallpapers on each workspaces like Wallpapoz. But I prefer using Compiz Config settings manager for its simplicity and ease.

    I got this working perfectly. The only problem is when you disable show_desktop, all the icons and documents on the desktop disappear as well. any way to get around this?

    I still want to have my firefox and disk icons present.
