PwnageTool is yet another famous jailbreaking tool from iPhone Dev team, to jailbreak your device on Mac. Dev team has released PwnageTool 4.01 to jailbreak iOS 4 (iPhone OS 4) on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G(non MC model only).
With PwnageTool, baseband for your device is not upgraded while upgrading the firmware, although ultrasn0w 0.93 is available to unlock your device on any existing baseband. PwnageTool 4.01 creates custom ipsw files for iOS 4 after which you can use to update and jailbreak your device on iOS 4 while preserving baseband.
There are certain conditions which you must know before jailbreaking your device, to check whether PwnageTool 4.01 supports your device for jailbreak or not. Read them carefully:
- Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom. Make sure you did not use Spirit to jailbreak your device earlier.
- If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode. Alternatively, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac).
- If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode. Alternatively, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac).
