In less than 24 hours since the release of final version of iOS 4(iPhone OS 4), iPhone Dev team came up with ultrasn0w 0.93 to unlock iPhone 3G/3GS on any baseband. The unlock is available for jailbroken devices only, and as of yesterday there was no jailbreak tool available to work with final build of iOS 4. But, the Dev team has come up with an update for everyone of you willing to use the amazing new features of iOS 4.
Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 has been released to jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4. Earlier version of redsn0w could only recognize iOS 4 GM and not the final iOS 4 while jailbreaking. The jailbroken device will have the features like multitasking, home screen wallpaper which otherwise is not available to iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G users on iOS 4.

Although the tool is not a final release, it will still be able to jailbreak your device. For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at final iOS 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w. If you depend on unlocking, then you can use ultrasn0w 0.93 to unlock your device on any baseband.

Update: There’s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed above) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don’t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Hi i have been reading around to find out how to unlock an iphone 4 with OS 4.2. it seems the more i read the more i get confused. what can you share with me on this? what tool can i use to do this. i did D/L redsnow 9.5 and 9.6. are these the proper tools to jailbreak and unlock? of course i don’t want to proceed until i know what i am doing.

Hi Allen, Donot use redsn0w if you rely on unlocking your device. Unlocking is only possible with ultrasn0w. Ultrasn0w is the tool to unlock your device.
Currently, ultrasn0w is not available to unlock iOs 4.1 / iOS 4.2, so, wait for the release. And prior to ultrasn0w release, you’ll see PwnageTool (for Mac) and Sn0wbreeze (for windows) to jailbreak your device preserving the existing baseband, so that you can unlock it with ultrasn0w, as soon as it is released.
So, wait for PwnageTool/Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iOS 4.2/iOS4.1 and then, unlock it with latest version of ultrasn0w that will be released soon.
