Streamtuner is used to play internet radio from various online radio streaming stations, and Streamripper is a terminal recording application that lets you record media to your system. The combination of the applications allows you to record streaming media from any radio station.
Streamtuner and Streamripper are both linux based applications. You can record music from any streaming radio station and increase your collection of latest songs, that too with high quality. The ripped files are stored in mp3 format at a desired location, and are playable with a media player of your choice!
#1. Installation
Ubuntu users can install Streamtuner and Streamripper from the repositories. Use the following command:
sudo apt-get install streamtuner streamripper
#2. Start Streamtuner
Go to Applications>>Sound & Video. Click Streamtuner to begin the application.

#3. Settings
Now, you need to set Streamtuner to rip streaming radio using Streamripper.
Go to Edit>>Preferences>>Applications, and paste the code given below:
x-terminal-emulator -e streamripper %q -r -q -d /home/USERNAME/myRecords
- Your mp3 files will be stored at the location defined by: “/home/USERNAME/myrecords“
- With “-r” option, Streamripper will create a relay server so that your media is downloaded once only.
#4. Play stream and Record

Press the Record button to begin recording the music. It will pop-up a terminal that will show the current recording. Also, as stated above, a myRecords folder in your home directory will be created where recorded songs are saved. You can also select multiple recordings at the same time. If you face problems with the recorded mp3 files, you can always edit it with some mp3 editor.
Here’s how you can have your own collection of mp3 songs! Like it? Let us know.
