Recent introduction of SSL enabled web search by Google depicts how much it is concerned about the privacy and security of its users. With the SSL enabled websites, third party cannot intercept any form of data transferred between the browser and the website. In its beta stage, this service is not enforced on the users, and one can only access the service by visiting https://www.google.com.
If you care about your privacy and security, you would like to use the service in enforced mode, rather than manually editing the address every time you need to search. There are addons and extensions to help you:
For Firefox users:

- A window pops up asking you to add a new search engine. Select the check box to make it your default search engine and click add.

A new search engine will be added to Search bar at top-right corner of firefox browser. Now your privacy and security is always maintained while searching on firefox!
For Chrome Users:
As such there is no extension made to add Google Secure search to the list of your Search engines, but the is a decent extension that will enforce an encrypted version for the websites that have SSL enabled on them, every time you visit the website.
- Head over to Chrome Extensions gallery. Download and install the extension KB SSL Enforcer.
To make sure whether the extension is working or not, go to www.google.com and you will see SSL enforcement as in the image below.

Now your privacy and security is always maintained while searching on chrome as well!
For those, who do not wish to use extensions or addons on their browser, there is a possible solution, by adding Google Secure Search to the list of your search engines. This works for Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer as well. For step by step guide to do this, refer to the post – How to: Use Google SSL Search as Default Search Engine in Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
