Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu announced the codename for Ubuntu 11.04 to be ”Natty Narwhal“. The announcement came in this morning with a blog post explaining the reason behind the codename to be chosen.
Some of you might be aware of the 6 month release cycle, making it possible for Ubuntu team to release new version twice a year. The development for Natty will begin after Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) is released in October.

The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is a medium-sized toothed whale that lives year-round in the Arctic.
An excerpt from the announcement:
And so, we come swiftly to a conclusion: allow me to introduce the Natty Narwhal, our mascot for development work that we expect to deliver as Ubuntu 11.04.
The Narwhal, as an Arctic (and somewhat endangered) animal, is a fitting reminder of the fact that we have only one spaceship that can host all of humanity (trust me, a Soyuz won’t do for the long haul to Alpha Centauri). Read More
